Graeme Samuel on Australia’s changing media landscape

August 14th, 2006 · Comments Off

I attended a public talk by Graeme Samuel, Chairman of the ACCC on Australia’s changing media laws and their possible impact..he said a lot of things, and you can read the full transcript on ACCC’s website. The interesting bit for us of course is that he says that newspapers and TV stations etc are only modes of delivering content, and that mergers or takeovers of these companies will not necessarily effect the content itself. He refused to speculate about whether the new cross media ownership laws will encourage concentration, or reduce diversity, but said that the ACCC is only a regulatory authority, and that it will analyse each case of a merger or takeover on the basis of its merit at that point.

There were journalists at the seminar, and a few asked questions about the impact of these laws on journalists–Mr. Samuel acknowledged that the journalist community was perhaps concerned about its survival, what with citizen journalism and all, and the possible increased concentration of ownership, but said that he does not see any threat to the survival of the clan. Matthew Ricketson, online content producer for the Age was present and asked Mr Samuel a related question, and I am considering getting in touch with him to see if he would like to comment on convergent journalism and its present and future.

Here are the sites we mentioned today

The wikipedia entry for citizen journalism is really interesting http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citizen_journalism

As is the one for online journalism
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Online_journalism

Interestingly, there is no entry for “convergent journalism”.

And have a look at Fairfax Digital Productions

Week 2 What is Convergent Journalism?

August 1st, 2006 · Comments Off

Today we examined the three major daily newspapers in Melbourne and compared them to their online sites. We wanted to answer the following questions about each news site:

What is the structure of the front screen?
What categories is the site divided into?
How closely does the site resemble the print version? Are there additions/ What are they?
What new media elements are present?
How is hyperlinking used? Internally? Externally?
How web aware is the site – use of XML, search customization?
Describe the use of layout, graphics, design, typography?
Describe the quantity and type of adverstising – how well integrated is it?

You can read our answers here
